Intermediates' show

New class, new challenges! When they move up from the Juniors to the Intermediates, students take on a bigger challenge: performing on a big stage in front of a large audience!

In order to achieve this, we bring all our Intermediate students together in one big show. Each group takes on a section of a larger script (usually an anthology piece with lots of parts!). They work on their sections separately in class from February to June, and the whole project is overseen by a director who keep the project on track. Shortly before the show, all the groups are brought together to work on the linking pieces.

Finally, in May or June, the groups all perform the play twice over the course of a week-end.

How does it work?

We start by picking a show that can be broken down into sections, so that each Intermediate group can take on a manageable, 20-30 minute section of the show.

The shows we choose are usually modern rewritings of classic stories, like
Arabian Nights, the Canterbury Tales, or most recently, ancient Greek mythology. This means that throughout their intermediates journey, our students come into contact with classic tales, but in a language and style that they can engage with more easily.

On the day of the show, multiple Intermediate groups come together to perform the whole show as one big group. This has mutliple benefits: it allows them to get to know other students from across the youth theatre, gives them a sense of community with the other students, introduces them to other parts of the shows that they're performing, and provides them with a big audience, since the parents from all of the groups come to watch the whole show.
